Alanis Morissette, “Season Of The Witch”

Looking to add to your Halloween playlists? How about a new rendition of “Season Of The Witch”? Originally by Donovan, this version comes courtesy of Alanis Morissette and Cornerstone Recordings.

Per Cornerstone Recordings’ summary:

Alanis Morissette's version of “Season Of The Witch” is a dark, slow burning reinterpretation of Donovan's 1966 psychedelic classic. Morissette leans into the song's uneasy, supernatural atmosphere, delivering the familiar melody with a heavier and more ominous character than Donovan's original. At five minutes long, the arrangement has room to build gradually, giving her vocal a brooding intensity that suits the song remarkably well.

The original “Season Of The Witch” appeared on Donovan's landmark 1966 album Sunshine Superman. Its cryptic imagery and repeated warning that it "must be the season of the witch" helped make it one of the enduring songs of the psychedelic era, subsequently interpreted by numerous artists including Julie Driscoll with Brian Auger, Al Kooper and Stephen Stills, Vanilla Fudge and, more recently, Lana Del Rey.

Alanis Morissette released her version in September 2026, and the cover was prominently featured in the trailer for the supernatural mystery series Yaga, starring Carrie-Anne Moss and based around the folklore of Baba Yaga. The series premieres October 23 on AMC+ in the United States and Crave in Canada, with Morissette's eerie interpretation particularly fitting for the show's mixture of mystery, witchcraft, and ancient folklore.
