Griff on Late Night With Seth Meyers

There’s not a lot of silver linings when it comes to the ongoing pandemic. Hell, most people have stopped even referring to it as a pandemic and it’s not just something we all live with—even as more people are getting sick with the variants. If one can find some good amongst the piles of dead, destroyed businesses, and more constant traumatic assaults on our lives, then it is worth celebrating. It doesn’t mean the horrors of the past two years were worth it, or even provide some consolation against the backdrop of all of that dread, but victories must still be touted and celebrated.

One of those small bits of positivity was that talk shows had to get innovative with how they conducted certain parts of their usual routine. In particular, the musical performances showed great technical innovation and visual splendor that made for a more compelling performance than simply playing songs in front of the usual boring backdrop. Late Night With Seth Meyers did a particularly great job with these, as has been highlighted in this space before with other guests like Phoebe Bridgers.

And here’s another example of how this inventive approach yielded terrific results, this time with English singer Griff. Obviously it helps that her song is a fun pop bop, but add to it the water on black tarp appearance of UNDER THE SKIN, Stranger Things, or Mac’s dance from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and an engaging amount of imagery arises that pairs excellently with the giddy song of heartbreak. It recalls the old performances on variety shows and talk shows that were basically precursors to music videos with their dedication to appealing visuals and memorable choreography. Enjoy Griff performing “Black Hole” on Late Night With Seth Meyers from May 19, 2021.
