Jenny Nulf’s Favorite Movies of 2021

Based on a few other posts in Afternoon Delights, specifically this one and this one, it’s probably clear that I’m a big fan of year-end wrap-up videos. It’s not just the nerd’s innate love of lists (which is an odd phenomenon) and it’s not simply those videos that have a few clips and then folks talking over them.

There are some people that figure out brilliant ways of combining images from the past year with music to create a sort of through line of themes and tones that show a dialogue between very disparate works. The echoing effect found in combining these visuals and audio cues manifests as a mixtape that is at once deeply personal to its creator, but also reflects the emotional temperature of the previous year through examples of its art.

Such is the case with Jenny Nulf’s video of her Favorite Movies of 2021. Nulf is a film critic for the Austin Chronicle and Programs Director for the Austin Asian American Film Festival. In addition to her talents writing about and curating movies, she also starting making these awesome videos assembling her favorites of the past year that are wide-ranging to include mainstream titles and lesser known fare, revered darlings and unexpected entries. It’s a good way to relive some of the cinematic highs of 2021 while also adding to your list of movies to seek out that you may have otherwise have missed.
