Mark Hamill on QVC in 1992

Being the best Joker doesn’t always pay the bills, okay? In 1992, Mark Hamill popped over to QVC to help sell some Star Wars collectibles—including some sweatshirts, comic strip panels, ceramic Chewbaccas—while engaging in fun discussions about behind-the-scenes stuff with host Steve Bryant.

For those who don’t recall or weren’t around, QVC is a home shopping network that peddles all sorts of wares and, as it became more successful, began pulling in celebrities to help push these products.

Something curious about this situation is that it was around a time when Hamill (along with Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher) all seemed to detest speaking about Star Wars (Ford…never really changed in that regard).

And yet the dude is a consummate professional, excitedly talking about the productions of the films while marveling at the…not bad but certainly not great collectibles being offered. There’s also the QVC staple of viewers phoning in to rave about the product, but this has the additional flavoring of Star Wars fans (before so many turned truly noxious) incredibly excited to talk about their favorite franchise and speak to one of their biggest idols. The other truly surprising element is that Steve Bryant, the QVC host, knows a ridiculous amount of trivia and information about films and not just Star Wars. It’s this weird twist where he rattles off obscure facts that you can equally intrigues and disturbs Hamill. The entire segment runs two hours, but it’s fun to skip around for the awkward small talk, enjoyable anecdotes, and odd offerings on sale one magical night in 1992.
