October 2021 Pre-Shows

A particularly nerdy thing I really enjoy is making visual mixtapes that blend various films, shows, footage, genres, mediums, with music to create something that hopefully evokes some form of emotion. Even though I grew up in the ‘80s, where the musical montage was so prevalent it was enough to make Sergei Eisenstein blush, I pinpointed that it actually stems from when I was at a Star Trek convention in the ‘90s (probably my third or fourth) and they played a sampling of clips of Star Trek: Voyager set to “Sloop John B” by The Beach Boys. I thought that was incredibly brilliant and so I’ve gravitated to such works, whether it’s AMVs, or year-end mash-ups, or Alamo Drafthouse Pre-Shows.

I was lucky enough to be asked by International Man of Leisure Mike Vanderbilt to create a few pre-shows for some Chicago-area screenings. And so here are some of them.

There’s violence and gore and cursing. You’ve been warned.

(I didn’t get paid for them, I don’t look to make money off other people’s work, I just think it’s a fun endeavor that reflects the inherent remix culture of our society)

First up is for a drive-in screening at Rock Island Public House of 2007’s GRINDHOUSE on October 16, 2021:

Next is also for Drive-In at RIPH. On October 17, 2021, they screened HOCUS POCUS (1993), and that gave way to this witchy mix:

Then for Music Box Theatre’s month-long program of Music Box Of Horrors At The Drive-In, I made this pre-show for a screening of SCREAM 2 (1997) that was presented by the Halloweenies podcast on October 27, 2021.

And last but not least (well, also not last as there’s actually a couple of more that will be showing up this weekend)…here’s the pre-show for last night’s Music Box Of Horrors At The Drive-In presentation of 2002’s QUEEN OF THE DAMNED. Enjoy!

Thanks again to Mike Vanderbilt for the opportunity! Hope these short little video mixtapes of songs and clips brighten up your day and prepare you for your Halloweekend ahead!
