Patrick H. Willems on Music Videos
Patrick H. Willems is constantly churning out great work. Truly — banger after banger that looks at all manner of different aspects of film, filmmaking, film watching, trends, genres, and more. It’s a genuinely impressive and staggering collection of work that shows no signs of stopping with his latest. The season premiere of his video essays is all about music videos — their origins, their appeals, their place in the filmmaker pipeline, and their relevance to culture now.
He looks at how music videos were such a formative ground for so many directors, and whether that can ever happen again.
Willems does a thorough job without feeling too didactic and presents some facts you may not know as well as some insights that make total sense as he assembles them. All done in a great presentation that’s also fun and funny (the final gag had me laughing out loud).
