Each week, Neon Splatter contributors offer up some viewing options found on streaming (U.S. unless otherwise noted). Movies, TV shows, specials, and more. New and old, from all sorts of genres and nations. Most importantly, we deem them worthy of your time.

Rob Dean:  SUBWAY (1985)

What It Is: On improvising a burglary at a shady tycoon's home, Fred takes refuge in the hip and surreal universe of the Paris Metro and encounters its assorted denizens, the tycoon's henchmen and his disenchanted young wife.

Where It Is: Tubi

Why You Should Watch It: “One of the founding films of the cine du look movement, Luc Besson’s SUBWAY is a gorgeous and fairly offbeat fable full of colorful characters, beautiful cinematography, and gripping melodrama. You can see the origins of Besson’s aesthetic and approach in this early movie, and it is an enchanting experience all around.”

Shafi Malik: ‘71 (2014)

What It Is: A young British soldier is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the streets of Belfast in 1971. Unable to tell friend from foe, and increasingly wary of his own comrades, the raw recruit must survive the night alone and find his way to safety through a disorientating, alien and deadly landscape.

Where It Is: Amazon Prime (UK only—available for rent in US)

Why You Should Watch It: “There’s no doubt that Yann Demange’s feature directorial debut is a hard watch considering the subject matter. However, what might surprise audiences is how much it’s works as an efficient Action-Thriller by the way of John Carpenter and Walter Hill. Also includes a great physical lead performance by Jack O’ Connell and David Holmes’ score thunders away.”

Alexis M. Collazo: Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014)

What It Is: Set in the Prohibition era of the 1920s Boardwalk Empire is the story of Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, the treasurer of Atlantic County, Atlantic City, New Jersey. Due to his relationships with mobsters as well as political contacts, the Federal Government start to take an interest in him. His lavish lifestyle seems at odds with his position, and as well as his connections, there is prolific bootlegging in the area.

Where It Is: HBO Max

Why You Should Watch It: “I'm currently in the middle of rewatching the series and it's just so good. It's got everything you need: ruthless gangsters, crooked cops, great music, booze, sex, violence and tons of great actors.”
