Fantasia 2026: SOUR MINNOWS
Director Harrison Atkins trades conventional alien-invasion tropes for a slow descent into existential dread, AI paranoia, and the loss of bodily autonomy in his latest film, SOUR MINNOWS. Roommates Ricky (David Brown, JURY DUTY) and Tepper (Chase Williamson, THE GUEST) live fairly uneventful lives filled with work and the occasional creative outlet. Reality cracks when the pair encounter a group of people lying on the ground licking concrete. A scene that could be summed up with mental illness or substance abuse evolves into a more invasive situation devoid of hope.
An enigmatic news announcement about the details surrounding the death of a performer plays throughout the film, further supporting the odd occurrences the two men are experiencing. Lapses in time fracture through their smoke-induced veil and Ricky’s work training AI begins to bleed into his personal life. Their memory disintegrates to the point where Tepper and Ricky experience conflicting perceptions despite being in the same room together. One swears they just watched a movie that the other one is currently trying to set up on screen. It’s these types of confusing interactions that makes SOUR MINNOWS strangely menacing. The disturbances are rooted in psychological dread and the fear of losing one’s mind.
These fractured realities fuel the film's pervasive sense of dread. Self-aware Ricky begins to worry if he is descending into a psychotic break. While shopping at the mall listening to a podcast, he realizes the narration is reflective of his own movements. When he tries to express what’s happening to his friends, he’s met with further confusion and unresolved answers. Looking out the window, Ricky finds himself staring back from the front yard. Phantom knocking coupled with an uncontrollable grasp on his environment sends him into an emotional frenzy on par with a bad acid trip.
Atkins frequently relies on intimate close-ups, allowing Brown's subtle performance to carry the film's emotional weight. Subtle facial expressions morph from confusion to fear and ultimately reveal a cathartic sadness as Ricky speaks with one of his close friends about his experiences. The source of Ricky's unraveling ultimately proves more enigmatic than psychological illness alone, reframing the film's anxieties through an ominously cosmic lens. He’s informed that there are ways to cope with his challenging new reality, but Ricky is not the stereotypical hero who rises to the occasion to take back his life.
Ricky’s romantic interest, Aura (Suzanna Son), describes the experience as a “permanent state of déjà vu.” Atkins transfixes this feeling onto the audience with dialogue, chaotic camera angles, and lighting. The film doesn’t fully unravel its plot until about halfway through its 83-minute runtime. These cinematic manipulations fit perfectly within the story but may frustrate audiences because the confusion Ricky experiences is projected onto the viewer, making them question if they are fully understanding what they are watching on-screen.
SOUR MINNOWS is not a typical horror film and falls into the vein of BACKROOMS with its modest production budget, limited cast, and eerie surroundings. Atkins captures an impactful story without the cinematic bells and whistles which can prove inspirational to indie filmmakers and genre audiences but may prove less satisfying for viewers seeking elaborate creature designs and menacing antagonists. Rather than relying on elaborate monsters or cheap jump scares, Atkins finds horror in the collision of AI, fractured perception, and existential uncertainty, transforming everyday moments into an unsettling meditation on autonomy and identity. An atypical stoner and body-snatcher film, SOUR MINNOWS proves psychological horror can be just as harrowing as any monster movie.
