Each week, Neon Splatter contributors offer up some viewing options found on streaming (U.S. unless otherwise noted). Movies, TV shows, specials, and more. New and old, from all sorts of genres and nations. Most importantly, we deem them worthy of your time.

Shafi Malik: MOSHARI (2022)

What It Is: Two sisters are forced inside a mosquito net (moshari) to survive — but can they survive each other?

Where It Is: Vimeo

Why You Should Watch It: “No wonder this Bangladeshi horror short has been endorsed by Jordan Peele and Riz Ahmed! An original concept directed with a distinct style. It’s Bangladesh’s submission to 2023 Oscar Short Film category. Please check it out, it will only take up 20 minutes of your time!”

Jeremy Lowe: WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY (2022)

What It Is: Four months after the death of her husband, a woman on the brink of motherhood is tormented in her home by a strange woman who wants her unborn baby.

Where It Is: The Roku Channel/Vudu

Why You Should Watch It: “It's hard to think of INSIDE as a holiday film, mostly because of it being so mean-spirited in nature, but it takes place on Christmas Eve and that adds to the subversive nature of it. This film is a brutal, visceral masterpiece of extreme violence. The cinematography and score exponentially adds to dread. This is not for everybody, but if you like your genre films too make you feel bad about watching it, then this is for you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!”

Kiley Fox: Japanese Film Festival Online 2022

What It Is: JFF+ Independent Cinema is a free online film streaming program that features Japanese independent films.

Where It Is: JFF+ Independent Cinema Online website

Why You Should Watch It: “I look forward to this every year. They curate the most interesting, beautiful, and exciting movies. Always free, you just need to make an account. It started yesterday, December 15!”

Rob Dean:  BARDO: FALSE CHRONICLE OF A HANDFUL OF TRUTHS (2022)

What It Is: An acclaimed journalist-turned-documentarian goes on an oneiric introspective journey to reconcile with the past, the present and his Mexican identity.

Where It Is: Netflix

Why You Should Watch It: “As I said in my review on Bullz-Eye.com, ‘uses lush imagery, poignant moments and haunting emotional honesty to tell a compelling story.’ The movie is certainly another quasi-masturbatory bit from Iñárritu, but it works far better than his other romps in that same sandbox. The magical realist elements are perfectly crafted and create a powerful tale of one man’s life.”
