Each week, Neon Splatter contributors offer up some viewing options found on streaming (U.S. unless otherwise noted). Movies, TV shows, specials, and more. New and old, from all sorts of genres and nations. Most importantly, we deem them worthy of your time.

Rob Dean:  THE BRAIN (1988)

What It Is: With the help of an alien organism, a man brainwashes audiences through television; a troubled high school student is determined to stop them.

Where It Is: Amazon Prime

Why You Should Watch It: “A delightful late ‘80s creature feature that features a creature that is equal parts goofy and dope. THE BRAIN feels like an obvious idea for a plot, but it’s always in the telling where things succeed or fail—luckily this one succeeds and is a lot of fun with its bonkers monsters and execution, complete with a terrific showdown in a warehouse. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but just enough that you’re invested in watching this weird and funny film.”

Shafi Malik: THUPPARIVAALAN (2017)

What It Is: Detective Kaniyan Poonkundran who craves for an interesting case to solve, faces a major challenge while solving the mystery of a murdered dog which leads him to capture a powerful rival who proves to be a fitting opponent for him.

Where It Is: Amazon Prime

Why You Should Watch It: “Benedict Cumberbatch?

Move aside!

Robert Downer Jr?

Take a hike!

There's a new Sherlock in town and his name is Vishal! Intriguing mystery, cool-ass fight scenes and a worthy villain make this a really entertaining watch!”

Khayla McGowan: Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020 - )

What It Is: The support crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, have to keep up with their duties, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies.

Where It Is: Paramount

Why You Should Watch It: “I love animation and Star Trek separately, so when I recently found that they combined them into a bonkers show, I leapt at this fun ride! From serious topics to wacky and genuine relationships to gruesome rivalries, this show has a little of something for everyone.

BONUS: you don't even have to be a Trekkie to pick this one up (even though it certainly helps)!”

Alexis M. Collazo: The Protector (2018 - 2020)

What It Is: A young man discovers that he has special powers. Now it is necessary to learn to use these forces in order to protect the city and all humanity against the dark forces that want to destroy Istanbul. In this journey there is no other choice but to act with his friends who will help him.

Where It Is: Netflix

Why You Should Watch It: “Went through a phase of exclusively watching foreign television series and this was one of faves. It has some familiar superhero elements-a reluctant chosen one, immortal baddies, sarcastic quips, etc-but has a bit of a different feel to it with it's own unique mythology and cultural aspects.”

Jeremy Lowe: ANTRUM (2018)

What It Is: The documentary purports to tell the story of Antrum, a movie released in the late ‘70s that supposedly has deleterious effects on those who watch it; the bulk of the movie is allegedly the only known print of the film, which has itself been altered by an unknown third party.

Where It Is: Tubi

Why You Should Watch It: “This film felt dirty, and a genuine piece of occult that should never be watched by human eyes. There are similar themes between this and John Carpenter’s Masters Of Horror episode, “Cigarette Burns.ANTRUM starts out as a Satanic panic mockumentary about a cursed film that kills anybody that watches it, and the rest is said film. ANTRUM is if you took the gritty aesthetic of Rob Zombie (THE DEVIL’S REJECTS) and the dry tension of Ti West (HOUSE OF THE DEVIL) and mixed them together at a circle jerk hosted by Anton Lavey in the ’70s, it’s just that fucking good! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!”
